Mapping the apocalypse : emptiness and trace of Chernobyl zone in literature

Do czarnobylskiego korpusu tekstów należą utwory apokaliptyczne - wytwory zarówno wysokiej jak i niskiej kultury. Czarnobylskie i postczarnobylskie teksty postrzegane są jako komunikat prowadzący do prawdy i przedstawiający prawdziwą realność, pozostawiając świadectwo dla przyszłych pokoleń. Tamara Hundorova, wychodząc od znaczenia Czarnobyla jako słowa-symbolu oznaczającego zupełną katastrofę, postrzega 1986 rok jako moment narodzin w Ukrainie nowej postmodernistycznej świadomości i literatury. Wskazuje także, że Czarnobyl stał się miejscem "niewyrażalnego" w kulturze ukraińskiej - miejscem podobnym do Oświęcimia czy Hiroszimy, fenomenem zbliżonym do Holocaustu w innych kulturach europejskich. Dlatego też, w opinii kijowskiej badaczki, Czarnobyl wymaga re-interpretacji, swoistego prze-pisania. Wykorzystując myśl włoskiego filozofa Giorgio Agambena (O zaletach i niedogodnościach życia wśród widm) oraz koncepcję heterotopii w ujęciu Michaela Foucaulta (Heterotopie - Inne przestrzenie), chciałabym przyjrzeć się literackim reprezentacjom Prypeci, Czarnobyla i czarnobylskiej zony jako miasta-mogiły, miasta-cmentarza, krajobrazu po katastrofie, napełnionego pustką nieobecności człowieka.

Chernobyl and post-Chernobyl texts are perceived as certain messages leading towards truth and depicting actual reality, leaving a testimony for the sake of future generations. Tamara Hundorova, taking as the starting point the meaning of Chernobyl as a word-symbol signifying a total catastrophe, sees the year 1986 as the moment of birth of new Ukrainian postmodernist consciousness and literature. She also points out that Chernobyl has become the locus of the "ineffable" in Ukrainian culture - a place not unlike Auschwitz oraz Hiroshima, a phenomenon akin to the Holocaust in other European cultures. Hence, according to the above mentioned Ukrainian scholar, Chernobyl calls for a re-interpretation, a certain kind of re-writing. To Hundorova, the apocalyptic reception of Chernobyl constitutes the departure point for an analysis of the rhetorical codes of the Chernobyl discourse. Utilizing the thought of the Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben (On the Uses and Disadvantages of Living Among Specters) and the concept of heterotopy as elaborated by Michael Foucault (Heterotopias - Other Spaces), I would like to analyze the literary depictions of Pripyat, Chernobyl and the Chernobyl zone as a tomb-town, cemetery-town, a landscape after cataclysm, pervaded with the emptiness of human absence.
