The principal aim of this paper is to bring closer the historical circumstances, intellectual and existential motives and selected philosophically significant domains of the difficult and at the same time inspiring encounter of Edith Stein - a thinker formed by phenomenology elaborated at the beginning of 20th century under the auspices of Edmund Husserl - with the scholastic philosophy of Thomas Aquinas (especially his metaphysics and anthropology). In my paper I try to demonstrate, on the one hand, an intellectual autonomy of Edith Stein, and on the other hand, her authentic interest in the thought of Aquinas and her endeavors to know thoroughly and deeply his thought in order to build her own philosophy in symbiosis and critical dialogue with this great philosophical and theological tradition. Therefore, I describe shortly the succeeding stages and important examples of this work, which could be understood as her own contribution to the building bridges accross the different, historically distant philosophical currents, which have in common to be directed towards seeking seriously the truth about being. Finally, I indicate the problem of transcendentals and its use in a such contexts as theory of values and reflexion about human dignity, as one of the areas of the possible community of thinking of both philosophers. |
