Abstract in English

The essay deals with Pythagorean motives and themes in Cyprian Norwid’s works. Such Norwid’s texts as Niewola, Piast i jego rewolucja, Quidam, Polka, Tyrtej- Za kulisami, Kleopatra i Cezar, Notatki z mitologii, Album Orbis, Milczenie are presented in the context of Pythagoras and his philosophical school. Conducted analysis proves that the interpretation of the legend of Pythagoras and the Pythagorean message given by Norwid concentrates on the problem of cognition (contemplation of the truth, initiation) and ethical issues (ethos of silence and asceticism). The figure of Pythagoras assumes the status of the master of initiation, becoming also the model of self-creation for the man of the 19th century.
