Artykuł zestawia twórczość S.I.Witkiewicza i Wyndhama Lewisa pod kątem postaw antyhumanistycznych. Obaj artyści reprezentują ambiwalentne podejście do kwestii antyhumanizmu: z jednej strony są bardzo krytyczni w ocenie człowieka, jego planów, ambicji i dążeń, z drugiej zaś mają nadzieję, że przez pracę nad sobą można ocalić wartość własnego człowieczeństwa. Ustawiając się w pozycji skandalistów, a raczej - w starożytnym znaczeniu - skandalonów, czyli przeszkód, o które trzeba się potknąć i z nimi skonfrontować, Witkacy i Lewis usiłują sprowokować ludzkość do stałej korekty niskich popędów, braków intelektualnych i innych wad. Ich twórczość można rozumieć jako eksperyment w stylu satyry Swifta.

The article brings together the work by Witkacy and his western European counterpart, Wyndham Lewis, in order to pinpoint elements of anti-humanism in their worldview and creations. Seemingly anti-humanist, Lewis’s and Witkacy’s literary and artistic projects can in fact be seen as aimed at reviving humanism in a form suitable to the realities of an inhuman century. Drawing on a shared tendency to position themselves as scandalists, or rather skandalons – stumbling blocks we need to confront – the two artists explore anti-humanism as a Swiftian experiment, meant to elicit a considered response from the recipients of their provocations. Equally wary of sentimentalising the human form, Lewis and Witkacy propose grotesque representations of the body, viewed as a constraining, pseudomorphic "shell", or a "primitive antediluvian vessel". This satirical distance serves to hide frustration with human entanglement in matter, which both Witkacy and Lewis wish to transcend by attaining a stable, definable selfhood. Much as they doubt the importance of individual consciousness, they nevertheless hold on to the higher ideal of preventing the dissolution of the self, by searching for "terra firma in a boiling and a shifting world".
