Who will eat a frog of Haberschrack? : the symbolism of the frog in the Augustinian Polyptych by Nicholas Haberschrack, from the 15th Century

Ufundowany był przez przeora klasztoru i konwent zakonu augustianów w Krakowie. Augustianie krakowscy byli twórcami programu ideowego tego poliptyku. W tekście opisano konteksty biblijne, teologiczne i historyczne dla tego obrazu. Autor artykułu stawia hipotezę o symbolicznym znaczeniu żab w obrazie. The text concerns symbolism of the frog in the Augustinian Polyptych painted by Nicholas Haberschrack of Nowa Wies (New Village) near Cracow, in the 15th Century. The picture was created in 1468. It was founded by a prior of the monastery and the abbey of the Augustinian Convent in Cracow. The Cracow Augustinians were the creators of idea program in this polyptych. The biblical, theological and historical contexts for the picture have been described in the text. The author of the study comes to the hypothesis that frogs have the symbolic meaning in the picture. The frogs may mean (alternatively): 1) the earthly vale, the sinn, or 2) satan and demonic power, or 3) heretics (Hussites), or 4) faithful Augustinians.
