War in the nuclear era : deliberations of civilians and military men on an atomic bomb and effects of its use

Artykuł mierzy się z zagadnieniem rozwoju wyobrażeń na temat bomby atomowej i wojny nuklearnej, snutych w środowisku naukowców, polityków, wojskowych dowódców oraz cywilnych strategów, począwszy od wizji bomby atomowej jako zwiastuna Nowego Ładu społeczno-politycznego aż po amerykańskie plany wojskowe zakładające atak jądrowy na setki celów w Związku Radzieckim. Celem wywodu jest pokazanie, że rewolucja nuklearna, która objęła nie tylko sferę wojskowości, ale również strategię, politykę międzynarodową czy wojenną etykę była związana nie tylko z nową technologią, ale - przede wszystkim - z ideą przyszłej wojny jądrowej, z tym, jak wyobrażano sobie jej zasięg, przebieg i konsekwencje.

The article discusses the issue of development of views on an atomic bomb and a nuclear war created by scientists, politicians, military commanders, as well as civilian strategists, starting from the vision of an atomic bomb as a herald of the New Deal, social and political, till the American military plans of a nuclear attack on hundreds of targets in the Soviet Union. The aim of the study is to demonstrate that the nuclear revolution which involved not only to military matters, but also strategy, international policy or war ethics was primarily linked to, apart from new technology, the idea of the future nuclear war and how its range, course and consequences were imagined.
