In this paper the author considers some of the major anthropological issues, such as conditions, causes, dimensions, and the appropriate subject and domain of application of human freedom, and tries to make explicit and to explain these issues in the context of the historical controversy between the antagonistic positions which gradually matured in the late 13th century and can be defined as anthropological voluntarism and anthropological intellectualism. Presenting the different phases of this controversy and the different versions - both radical and moderate - of the opposing positions, the author focuses his comparative and critical analysis of the main claims and arguments of the leading representatives of the voluntarist and intellectualist currents of this time - Henry of Ghent and Godfrey of Fontaines. The aim of his inquiries is to discover and explain both the causes of very real, irreductible discordances between their positions regarding the sources, essence, and justifications of human freedom (free judgment of reason versus free choice of the will) and - eventually - the moments of their relative agreement. |
