This is a comparative analysis of some aspects of the representation of childhood in the work of Bruno Schulz and Walter Benjamin (primarily in Schulz’s Cinamon Shops and Benjamin’s Berlin Childhood around 1900). They were both born in 1892. Although one grew up in Berlin, a European metropolis, and the other in a provincial town about one thousand kilometres to the east, their childhood was by and large shaped by a common Central-European bourgeois Jewish culture of the late 19th century. We can find in the work of both writers references to the theme of a messianic childhood, derived from the Jewish tradition and reinterpreted in the Modernist manner. Both Schulz and Benjamin use the creative as well as destructive aspects of that myth to construct their own versions of an image of a creative artist equipped with the faculty of a childlike sensitivity and cognition.
