Why is Gilda hard to resist? - Analysis of the femme fatale image in selected American noir films

Niniejsza praca podejmuje problematykę dotyczącą przypisywania demoniczności i bezwzględności jako wrodzonej cechy kobiet. Jednym z celów jest zbadanie fenomenu tego zjawiska oraz jego uzasadnienie. Przedstawiono jak obraz kobiety niegodziwej został przeniesiony na wielki ekran tworząc postać kultowego wampa. Ponadto ukazano w jaki sposób kino amerykańskie zaczęło typizować kobiety pod wpływem sytuacji społeczno-politycznej oraz wydarzeń historycznych. Następnie omówiono pochodzenie amerykańskiego noir i czynniki, które wpłynęły na jego charakterystykę i ewolucję. Najistotniejszą część pracy stanowi analiza wizerunku femme fatale na podstawie postaci pochodzących z filmów Sokół maltański, Podwójne ubezpieczenie, Gilda oraz Wielki Sen.

This thesis deals with the issue of assigning demonicity and ruthlessness as an innate feature of women. One of the goals is to investigate the phenomenon and its justification. It is presented how the image of the wicked woman was transferred to the big screen, creating the character of the cult vamp. Moreover, it is shown how American cinema began to typify women under the influence of the socio-political situation and historical events. Then, the origin of the film noir and the factors that influenced its characteristics and evolution is discussed. The most important part of the thesis is the analysis of the image of the femme fatale, based on characters from the following films: The Maltese Falcon, Double Indemnity, Gilda and The Big Sleep.
