A typical organizational structure is a staff-functional structure, in which an organization
is divided into functional departments: technical, economical, administrative etc. The
structure like this is simple and understandable for the employees. However this structure is
not flexible and efficient enough to adapt to the changing environment and to the expectations
of the customers. In this situation market organizations can use a matrix structure. The
matrix structure in companies is built by an additional (to functional dimension) dimension
in the structure of the organization . It can be based on the products of the organization or
on the groups of the customers.
In a museum the second, market dimension in the organizational structure can be presented
by stated service tasks. However, the functional dimension of the structure in the
museum should be expanded by the stated tasks, which don't have definite consumers on
the market. For example: collecting, preserving and scientific describing museumscollected
objects.
The new element in the matrix structure is the used of the double employees' hierarchy.
That's why the matrix structure can be used only if an organizational culture and managers
is properly prepared to function in the system with the double hierarchy. An organization,
which efficiently manage projects, is a good example in this case.
Nevertheless, some the ideas based on the matrix structure can be used in museum's
structure without necessity of building the whole matrix structure.
