This article attempts to take an overall view of the fiction of the award-winning French writer Pascal Quignard, perhaps best known for his novels Tous les matins du monde (All the Mornings in the World) and Les Ombres errantes (The Wandering Shadows). The recurrent elements of Quignard’s fiction - an invisible scene, fascination, secrets, traces, and a mysterious past - form a recurrent semantic and semiotic constellation, which reflects the basic structure of his literary imagination. It is the dialectical juxtaposing of the past and the present that defines Quignard’s literary project, the writing of modern anachronism.
