Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza zjawiska brokeringu językowego w dwujęzycznych szkołach w Polsce oraz polskich szkołach za granicą z perspektywy personelu szkolnego, głównie nauczycieli. Praca składa się z części teoretycznej oraz praktycznej. Pierwsza z nich przedstawia koncept brokeringu językowego w szerszym kontekście tłumaczenia ustnego i środowiskowego. W drugiej części pracy przedstawiono i przeanalizowano wyniki badań, których celem było zgromadzenie ogólnych informacji na temat występowania brokeringu językowego oraz nastawienia nauczycieli do tej praktyki. Rozdział pierwszy to zestawienie różnic pomiędzy tłumaczeniem ustnym i pisemnym, który wzbogacono o opis technik, typów i trybów tłumaczenia ustnego. Omówiono w nim także brak spójności terminologicznej związanej z zawodem tłumacza środowiskowego oraz przedstawiono rolę tłumaczy-amatorów (osób zajmujących się tłumaczeniami bez odebrania wykształcenia kierunkowego). Przedstawiono także historię tłumaczenia ustnego i jego związek z dwujęzycznością. Kolejno zaprezentowano wybrane aspekty pracy tłumacza środowiskowego oraz przysięgłego z uwzględnieniem różnic między nimi. Omówiono również zagadnienie tłumaczeń środowiskowych wykonywanych przez tłumaczy-amatorów i poruszono kwestię psychologiczną przekładu środowiskowego oraz etyki tego zawodu. Rozdział ten kończy się krótkim przeglądem zjawiska imigracji w Polsce i związanego z nim tłumaczenia środowiskowego.Rozdział drugi przedstawia teorię brokeringu językowego oraz analizę tego pojęcia. Omówiono różnice pomiędzy brokeringiem językowym i tłumaczeniem środowiskowym. Skupiono się także na historii tego zjawiska i jego typach, z uwzględnieniem występowania brokeringu językowego m.in. wśród dzieci w szkołach czy w kwestiach wrażliwych, takich jak tłumaczenie medyczne.Rozdział trzeci to opis pracy badawczej wykonanej metodą ankietową w czerwcu 2020 r. za pomocą kwestionariusza Google Forms. Badanie przeprowadzono wśród nauczycieli szkół dwujęzycznych w Polsce oraz nauczycieli szkół i instytucji polskich za granicą. W rozdziale opisano doświadczenia nauczycieli związane z brokeringiem językowym i jego występowaniem w szkołach. Zawarto też opis narzędzi badawczych, analizę wyników oraz wnioski końcowe. Treść kwestionariusza i komentarze nauczycieli w niezmienionej wersji są dostępne w Załączniku 1 i w Załączniku 2.

The aim of this thesis is to examine the phenomenon of language brokering in bilingual schools in Poland and Polish schools abroad from the perspective of school staff, especially teachers. It consists of a theoretical and an empirical part. While the first one introduces the concept of language brokering in a broader context of interpreting and community interpreting, the second presents the results of a survey, aimed at collecting general information on the existence of language brokering and teachers’ attitudes towards this practice. Chapter One focuses on the differences between translation and interpreting but mainly concentrates on interpreting techniques, types and modes. It also explores a certain terminological confusion regarding the profession of a community interpreter and examines the role of non-professionals working in this field. To foreground this issue, it presents the history of interpreting and its connections with bilingualism. Additionally, it examines certain legal aspects community interpreting and sworn interpreting and the differences between the two. Subsequently, the psychological aspects of interpreting are presented and the ethics of interpreting is discussed. Finally, the chapter offers a brief outline of the immigration situation in Poland and community interpreting services in this context.Chapter Two deals with the theory of language brokering. It presents the notion of language brokering (LB) and discusses differences between LB and community interpreting. This chapter concentrates on the history of language brokering, its types — including child language brokering (CLB) — and the phenomenon of brokering at schools and in (sensitive) medical settings.Chapter Three is a description of research conducted in June 2020 as a Google Forms survey. The questionnaire was distributed to teachers from bilingual schools in Poland and Polish schools abroad. It focused on teachers’ opinions about language brokering and its occurrence at schools. It contains research questions, research tools, the analysis of the results, a discussion of the limitations of the study and presents conclusions based on the results obtained. Each of the examples, separately presented in a table, is individually examined and followed by a discussion of the findings and conclusions. The content of the questionnaire and full answers to open questions given by teachers are presented in Appendix 1 and Appendix 2.
