The traditional garment as a distinguishing feature of an ethnic group: the example of the residents of Ukrainian descent in the Pieniężno and Lelkowo municipalities (in the Warmia and Masuria regions)

Niniejsza praca pt. Ubiór tradycyjny jako wyróżnik grupy etnicznej. Przykład mieszkańców gminy Pieniężno i Lelkowo pochodzenia ukraińskiego (Warmia i Mazury) jest projektem pionierskim, opisującym funkcje ubioru tradycyjnego tzw. "polskich" Ukraińców wywodzących się z historycznego i etnicznego pogranicza polsko-ukraińskiego, których okrutna historia XX w. wrzuciła w kontekst Ziem Odzyskanych . W obawie przed utratą tożsamości i oryginalnej kultury oraz tradycji przesiedleńcy ukraińskiego pochodzenia od początku swej bytności na terenach Warmii i Mazur eksponowali swój strój ludowy, który z czasem stał się podstawowym wyróżnikiem ich odrębności. Fundamenty owej pracy powstały podczas badań terenowych przeprowadzonych w gminach Lelkowo i Pieniężno powiatu braniewskiego (woj. warmińsko-mazurskie) w latach 2019-2020, gdzie trafili m.in w czerwcu 1947 r. byli mieszkańcy powiatu tomaszowskiego, zamieszkujący kiedyś wieś Wierzbica. Wykorzystana w pracy metoda obserwacji uczestniczącej oraz rozmowy poprowadzonej wg. zasad "historii mówionej" pomogła zrozumieć, jaką rolę pełni strój ludowy wśród miejscowych Ukraińców. Zważywszy na upływ czasu, który w naturalny sposób eliminuje pokolenia pamiętające Wierzbicę sprzed 1947 r. i razem z tym jej dziedzictwo zarówno materialne i niematerialne, jednym z najważniejszych zadań badawczych było pozyskanie materiału i udokumentowanie go. W trakcie eksploracji obszaru badawczego, udało mi się dotrzeć do interesujących zdjęcia z okresu przed 1947 r. oraz lat tuż po przesiedleniu, a także udokumentować unikatowe zbiory starych strojów, które znalazły się m.in w części katalogowej i stanowią bardzo ważny element tej pracy. W wyniku podjętej pracy badawczej, doszłam do przekonania, że dla Ukraińców z okolic Pieniężna i Lelkowa ich strój ludowy, chociaż w okrojonej formie, pozostaje elementem identyfikacji i wizualnego zamanifestowania przynależności do własnej grupy etnicznej. Dotyczy to również wyznawanych wartości, historii, zbieżnych poglądów i kultury.

This thesis, Traditional garment as a distinguishing feature of an ethnic group: the example of the residents of the Pieniężno and Lelkowo municipalities (in the Warmia and Masuria regions), is a pioneering project, describing the functions of traditional garments of the so-called “Polish” Ukrainians coming from the historical and ethnic Polish-Ukrainian borderlands who were thrown by the cruel 20th-century history to the Recovered Territories. Fearing the loss of their identity and original culture, the displaced persons of Ukrainian descent emphasized their traditional garment from the very beginning of their presence in the Warmia and Masuria regions. In time, it became a fundamental distinguishing feature of theirs.The basis of this thesis is the field research carried out in the Lelkowo and Pieniężno municipalities in the Braniewo district (the province of Warmia and Masuria) in 2019 and 2020. These municipalities are where the residents of the Wierzbica village in the Tomaszów district were relocated to in 1947. The participant observation method and conversations carried out in accordance with the “spoken history” principles allowed the author to understand the role of traditional garment among the local Ukrainians. Considering the passage of time, which in natural way eliminates the generations that remember pre-1947 Wierzbica and the related tangible and intangible heritage, one of the most important research tasks was to collect materials and document them. In the course of exploration of the research area, the author was able to find interesting photographs from before 1947 and from the years immediately following the relocation and to document unique collections of old garments that are presented in the catalogue section of the thesis, constituting a vital element thereof.As a result of the research, the author has concluded that for the Ukrainians from Pieniężno and Lelkowo, their traditional garment, even though cut down, remains an element of identification and a way of manifesting their membership in their own ethnic group. This also concerns their values, history, views, and culture.
