Kino, naśladując o wiele dłuższą tradycję literacką, korzystało (i wciąż to robi) w motywów bliskich każdemu człowiekowi, jak miłość, nienawiść, samotność, wolność i śmierć. Dojrzałe jej pojmowanie wymaga bowiem świadomości trzech głównych składowych: nieodwracalności, niefunkcjonalności i uniwersalności.
The theme of death has been present in cinema since its very beginning – in 1895 the viewers could have already watched a staged execution of Mary, the Queen of Scots, in the short film of several seconds created by Thomas Edison. Cinema, by way of the much longer literary tradition, has been using themes close to all human beings, such as love, hate, loneliness, freedom, and death. The end of life is also a subject that is familiar to films created specifically for children. A genre that is particularly prominent in this matter is horror. The objective of this work was to analyse the depiction of death in selected animated children's horror films and to prove that portraying themes associated with the end of life in works created for young audiences can have a positive effect on their development, and can serve as a base for parents and legal guardians to hold the conversation about passing with their child. Young people under the age of eight do not fully comprehend the concept of death. The mature understanding of it requires the awareness of its three main components: irreversibility, nonfunctionality, and universality. The most important period for the development of the concept of the end of life in children's minds is between the ages of five and eight. The purpose of this work was to prove that films (with special regard to horror works) created for viewers at this particular age and consisting of direct themes of death can significantly impact the evolution of the understanding of the end of life among children.
