Tardigrades are microscopic invertebrates, inhabiting a range of environments, from limno-terrestrial through aquatic ones, although to be active they require at least a thin layer of water. They are also known to the general public for their ability to sustain harsh environmental conditions, such as extremely high and low temperatures, cosmic radiation, very high and low pressure, and lack of water. Presently, we know about 1300 species of these animals, although this number is constantly rising, with many regions of the world being still poorly investigated. One of them is Kazakhstan, with only single species reported from the country. The aim of this research was thus to enrich the knowledge about the tardigrade fauna of this Asian country as by its geographical location it could bear high species diversity. During the examination of the samples from the Ile-Alatau National Park, I have recorded nine species. Amongst the found tardigrades, the most abundant was the genus Milnesium DOYÈRE, 1840, representing the order Apochela, which is characterised by six papillae around the mouth opening. One of the reported species I identified as a new to science was a species belonging to the genus Milnesium, and equipped with only five peribuccal papillae, which makes it the only and distinctive case in the entire family. In this BSc thesis, I present an integrative description of the new species, Milnesium pentapapillatum sp. nov., as well as a description of the local tardigrade fauna. Additionally, the phylogenetic position of the investigated species is presented and consequences of the description of the new species for diagnosis of the genus Milnesium, the family Milnesiidae and the order Apochela are discussed. |
