Praca magisterska jest formą analizy pojęcia „Południowa Piękność” (Southern Belle) na podstawie utworów literackich czterech amerykańskich autorów: Ellen Glasgow („Życie pod kloszem”, The Sheltered Life), Lillian Hellman (Another Part of the Forest; „Małe liski”, The Little Foxes), Williama Faulknera („Azyl”, Sanctuary; „Requiem dla zakonnicy”, The Requiem for a Nun) oraz Tennessee Williamsa („Tramwaj zwany pożądaniem”, A Streetcar Named Desire). Głównym tematem tej pracy jest postać „zagubionej i zdeprawowanej” „Południowej Piękności” – moralnie skażonej bohaterki, która jest przeciwieństwem ogólnego stereotypowego postrzegania „Południowej Piękności”. Jest to próba zdefiniowania, dlaczego te wszystkie kobiece charaktery reprezentują rozdarte, nikczemne „Południowe Piękności”.

This thesis analyzes the notion of the Southern Belle on the basis of six literary works of American writers: Ellen Glasgow (The Sheltered Life), Lillian Hellman (Another Part of the Forest; The Little Foxes), William Faulkner (Sanctuary; The Requiem for a Nun), and Tennessee Williams (A Streetcar Named Desire). The focal point of this paper is the image of the “lost and depraved” Southern Belle – a morally tainted heroine that is opposite to the more general, stereotypical perception of the Southern Belle. It is an attempt to determine why all the female figures from these literary examples represent the concept of the wanton and villainous Southern Belle.
