The subject of this thesis is the image, role and situation of Japanese women over the centuries of Edo and Meiji. The purpose of the thesis however is to show the impact of historical circumstances and changes that have taken place since the Edo period until the Meiji revolution on the situation and the role of women in the Japanese society of that time. Reforms that have been carried out in the era of modernization of the country had huge influence on the life of Japanese women at that time. However, to fully introduce the essence of those changes first we need to show how the situation of women looked during the reign of Tokugawa clan. By discussing the reforms of Meiji revolution it can be easily seen what and to what extent had changed in the Japanese society. Therefore, after the short introduction the first chapter focuses on outlining the historical overview of the Edo period, and more specifically it shows the characteristics of Japanese society of that time and the everyday life of women. It also shows the key reforms that have taken place at the turn of the XVIII and XIX century. The second chapter is fully devoted to the role of women in the family and their ideal as "good wife, wise mother." It also describes the new and the old Japanese family system, and shows how important was the introduction of universal education for all people. The last chapter presents the labour of women before and after the Meiji revolution. It shows both the work of women in the textile factories and in the entertainment industry as much as the other types of women's work. At the end there are shown the conclusions that resulted from the thesis. |
