The aim of the study was to describe the spatial and temporal variability of the dry spells in Poland and the reasons for their occurrence related to the specific type of synoptic situation and the local conditions conducive to the development of atmospheric droughts. For this purpose the daily sums of precipitation from 36 meteorological stations in Poland, and one located in the Czech Republic (Liberec) were analyzed. In addition, the calendar of synoptic situation by T. Niedźwiedź (2016) for Poland was used. The series of dry spells were determined on the basis of Kozminski criterion (1983, 1986). Partial objective was to assess the intensity and frequency of dry spells using the relative rainfall index RPI. Extremely dry, very dry and dry periods were identified using the Kaczorowska criterion (1962a). Scenarios of rainfall variability and related effects are presented. It was found that the highest numer of atmospheric droughts is observed in central Poland, while the lowest in the southern part of Poland. Dry masses of polar continental air heavily influence series of days without precipitation in eastern Poland. Dry spells show a strong correlation with atmospheric circulation. Days without precipitation were more often observed during anticyclonic (77.5%) than cyclonic situation (21.5%). The highest incidence of atmospheric droughts was observed during the anticyclonic wedge (19.6%), as well as high-pressure situations with influx of air masses from the south-east (12.7%) and east (9.1%). The drought phenomenon is influenced by local conditions, especially location in the lowland area and with precipitation shadow. Simulations of variation in precipitation tend to show a negative trend until the end of the 21st century, which may lead to an increase in atmospheric droughts and cause many socio-economic problems. |
