The text is about defining and identifying myth in contemporary culture. As a part of reality, which was used examining this problem has been selected phenomenon of advertising. This choice was motivated by such features as condensation of content, the presence of commonly understood stereotypes, topic and themes with numerous connotations and unidirectional message. To be able to examine the presence of myth in advertising was used the typology of myth's definitions by Richard Tomicki. The first honored by his approach to the myth describe it as a fully credible narrative on such important topics as cosmogony, model of the world, eschatology, social relations, etc., which does not negate the second type, and extends this insight recognizing the myth as an expression of the world view or way of thinking. The vast majority of the features of the myth stemming from these two perspectives can be found in various commercials, but not for any promotional announcement. Hence, the ad itself can not be equated with the myth, however can be considered as a potential carrier of the message.Within the third type author placed ways of defining myth that go far beyond the archaic myth, to which relates the first two types. Among the third group of definitions we took the approach of Roland Barthes, because it deals with the structure of the message as the basis of myth. Its content semiologist situates at connotative multi-leveled texts, which determines the process of naturalization, or interpretation of the semiotic system as a system of facts. Thus, the criterion of truth - instead of being in accord with reality - becomes a community of meanings and values, which means that the range of the myth is limited to the community of a single worldview and way of thinking.Since the content of the myth situates itself in the connotative layer of message, outside the community it becomes incomprehensible. On the other hand, as messages depend on the community in which they appear, must reflect the changes taking place in society, it is possible to reconstruct eg. on the basis of historical records relating to the reception of specific texts. Next, the differences between the functioning of archaic and modern myths are related to the cultural reach of their influence. In the first case a uniform belief exists within a given ethnic group, in the second, concerns the intersecting communities of belifs as Polish Catholics, European socialdemocrats, Latin American immigrants in the United States, to give examples from different ranges within Western culture.Coca-Cola commercials aiplayed in Occident countries, in the expression plane, using narratives organized around well-known motifs, like St. Nicholas, embody content plane in which the individuals achieve their happiness in relationships with other people. A group of promotional texts that was analyzed does not allow to determine the origin of the happiness myth contained in them, without which you can read only generally understandable message. Around the figure of St. Nicholas there is no specific mythology, a Christmas theme with its characteristic motifs are only the expression plane adapting the message to the season and the related cultural circumstances.Connotative location of message in Coca-Cola's advertising and its versatility only indicates that they are probably another myth carrier, possibly with a transcultural range. |
