Dodatkowo, zebrano opinie uczniów i nauczycieli odnośnie samej formy i organizacji wyżej wymienionego egzaminu. Praca została podzielona na dwie części, teoretyczną i empiryczną. Pierwsza z nich odniosła się do teorii dotyczącej pojęcia efektu zwrotnego, natomiast w drugiej zostało zaprezentowane badanie wpływu egzaminu maturalnego. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiono strukturę egzaminu maturalnego z języka angielskiego w polskim systemie edukacji. Ograniczenia i wnioski końcowe przeprowadzonego badania, stanowiły ostatnią cześć niniejszej pracy. |
abstrakt w j. angielskim: | It is commonly believed that tests have always had an impact on teaching and learning process. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to investigate if the washback of the upper secondary school-leaving examination in English as a foreign language exists. Specifically, the thesis aimed at exploring the impact of the examination on teachers’ and students’ practices as far as the teaching and learning was concerned. In addition, the study succeeded in presenting students’ and teachers’ beliefs and attitudes to the format and the organisation of this school-leaving exam. The thesis is divided into two parts, the first one focuses on the theoretical background while the second part is related to the study of washback. In Chapter 1, the upper secondary school-leaving examination in English as a foreign language in Polish context is presented. Chapter 2 is devoted to the concept of washback, as well as the other terms concerning this phenomenon. What is more, the types of washback and its selected hypotheses stated in the 1990s by different researchers are presented. The theoretical part ends with the discussion on the previous studies of washback carried out over the last two decades. The empirical part focuses exclusively on the presentation and analysis of the results. It begins with the description of the rationale, aims and the questions of the research. Then, context and participants of the study are presented, followed by the methodology applied for the purpose of the current thesis. Both qualitative and quantitative data were gathered with the use of detailed questionnaires for teachers and students, as well as interviews with students. As far as the results are concerned, the study proved that the washback effect of the upper secondary school-leaving examination in English exists in the Polish context. The gathered data revealed that exam did have a significant impact on both teachers’ and students’ practices. It determined various aspects of teaching and learning, starting from lesson preparation, task and methods used in class, to revisions of the material. The results indicated that the examination entailed both negative and positive consequences. Namely, it increased the teachers’ involvement in work, and it motivated students to learn and revise systematically. However, it turned out to be the source of students’ stress and anxiety. The data proved that the while preparing their learners, the teachers neglected some content of the curriculum because it wasn’t included in the exam requirements. The study ends with presenting the possible limitations, as well as the relevant conclusions related to the subject. |
