Niniejsza praca magisterska składa się z dwóch części: jedną jest edycja wybranego dzieła z II połowy XIX w., jakim jest powieść Ignacego Kraszewskiego pt. Chore dusze, drugą stanowi filologiczny wstęp do wybranego utworu. Tematem wstępu jest analiza fizjonomiczno-emocjonologiczna postaci – opisów ich wyglądu, zachowań, emocji oraz jej ekspresji, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem tej ostatniej jako jednego ze sposobów zakładania masek przez bohaterów. W edycji powieści starano się na tyle uwspółcześnić XIX-wieczny tekst, aby był on przystępny dla współczesnego odbiorcy, jednak przy jednoczesnym zachowaniu charakteru dawnego języka. Edycja została opatrzona notą edytorską, w której podano genezę powstania tekstu, informacje o podstawie oraz zasady jego wznowienia oraz wymieniono listę źródeł wykorzystanych do tworzenia komentarzy. Część filologiczna składa się ze wstępu, trzech rozdziałów oraz zakończenia i bibliografii. We wstępie wyłożono cel pracy, podano powody wyboru tematu, przywołano nazwiska i dzieła najważniejszych badaczy oraz dokonano krótkiego streszczenia zawartości poszczególnych rozdziałów. W rozdziale I (Fizjonomiczno-emocjonalne portrety bohaterów) zaprezentowano fizjonomiczną charakterystykę poszczególnych bohaterów, która służy skonfrontowaniu później ich wyglądu z charakterem (baza: Józef Pastuszka, Charakter człowieka. Struktura – typologia – diagnostyka psychologiczna). Rozdział II (Między maską a zasłoną, czyli kilka słów teorii) to teoretyczny wstęp do trzeciego, głównego rozdziału pracy (baza: Erving Goffman, Człowiek w teatrze życia codziennego i rozdział Józef Tischner, Wydarzenie spotkania [w:] tenże, Filozofia dramatu). Rozdział III (Za kulisami Chorych dusz) stanowi rozwinięcie zagadnienia zakładania masek przez bohaterów poprzez pryzmat ich ekspresji emocjonalnej (baza: Karol Darwin, O wyrazie uczuć u człowieka i zwierząt). Jako uzasadnienie wybory tematu pracy podano niesłabnące wciąż zainteresowanie tematami fizjonomiki, ekspresji emocjonalnej oraz – powiązanego z nią – zakładania masek tak wśród wielu naukowców, artystów, jak i – choć może w sposób nieuświadomiony – każdego przeciętnego człowieka. Drugim powodem jest uniwersalność literatury jako źródła informacji o człowieku. Zakończenie jest próbą odpowiedzi na kilka postawionych we wstępie pytań, w tym najbardziej bodaj zaskakującego o związek pomiędzy tytułem powieści a zakładaniem masek przez poszczególnych jej bohaterów.

This master’s thesis consists of two parts: the first is to edit the selected literary work from the second half of the nineteenth century, which is the novel Ignacy Kraszewski entitled Chore dusze, the second is a philological introduction to the selected literary work. The theme of introduction is to analyse physiognomic-emotional characters - descriptions of their appearance, behaviours, emotions and their expression, with particular emphasis on the latter as one of the ways the establishment of masks by the characters. In the edition of the novel attempted to sufficiently in contemporary nineteenth-century text to make it accessible to a modern audience, but at the same time retaining the character of the old language. The edition was featuring an editorial note, which showed the genesis of the text, the basis on his resume and the rules and the list the sources used to create comments. The philological part consists of an introduction, three chapters, a conclusion and a bibliography. In the introduction lined aim, stated reasons for choosing the topic, invoked the names and literary works of the most important researchers and made a short summary of the content of individual chapters. In the first chapter (Physiognomic-emotional portraits of heroes) are presented physiognomic characteristics of individual characters, which is confronted after their appearance with character (base: Józef Pastuszka, human nature. The structure - typology - psychological diagnostics). Chapter II (Between the mask and the curtain, a few words theory) is a theoretical introduction to the third, main chapter of master’s thesis (base: Erving Goffman, The man in the theater of everyday life and the cheapter Józef Tischner, The event of an encounter [in] idem, Philosophy drama). Chapter III (Behind the Scenes Chorych dusz), builds on the issues of establishment of masks by the characters through the prism of their emotional expression (base: Karol Darwin, The expression of emotions in man and animals). The rationale for the topic master’s thesis of given unrelenting still interested in topics physiognomy, emotional expression and - associated with it - the establishment of masks so among many scientists, artists, and - though perhaps in an unconscious way - every average person. The second reason is the universality of literature as a source of information about a person. The ending is an attempt to answer some questions posed in the introduction, including perhaps the most surprising of the relationship between the title of the novel and the establishment of masks by each of its heroes.
