LANGUAGE OF THE THEATRE OF THE ABSURD IN THE BIRTHDAY PARTY AND THE CARETAKER BY HAROLD PINTER
Harold Pinter, styl pinterowski, The Caretaker, The Birthday Party, Teatr Absurdu
Harold Pinter, Pinteresque style, The Caretaker, The Birthday Party, The Theatre of the Absurd
The objective of this thesis is to analyse Pinter’s dramatic language on the basis of his first full-length plays The Birthday Party and The Caretaker. My attention is focused on the dialogues that consist of absurdist elements, silences and pauses, frequent repetitions, and other characteristics of the “Pinteresque” style. The first chapter presents some background information on Harold Pinter and his relations to the Theatre of the Absurd, as well as provides an extended definition of the “Pineteresque” style, enumerating its most important features. The second chapter focuses on the language in The Birthday Party. In the analysis I refer to Martin Esslin’s critical views from his essays and books devoted to Pinter and employ Neil Bennison’s pragma-linguistic tools presented in his article “Accessing characters through conversation” as well as Vimala Herman’s theory of turn management in drama. The third chapter, inspired by Austen Quigley’s essay on The Caretaker, analyses the silences and pauses in The Caretaker, as well as other features of the characters’ language that affect relationships among them.
