The thesis aims to prove that Margaret Fuller proposes a reconstructed notion of femininity. It is based on her major work Woman in the Nineteenth Century. Firstly, nineteenth century views on gender are discussed. Fuller rejects this traditional vision as it impedes women. She asserts that both men and women are in the possession of the same soul. Therefore, they should be viewed as equal. Secondly, Fuller’s proposal of changes in various aspects of woman’s life is presented. Fuller proves it is possible to be an independent woman and to preserve inherently feminine features. The thesis examines Fuller’s assertion of gender not as biologically determined but socially constructed. She assumes that only by the deconstruction of social gender, the notion of femininity may change. Finally, the thesis presents both nineteenth century and modern reception of Woman in the Nineteenth Century.
