Celem pracy jest przedstawienie mechanistycznych aspektów romantyzmu. Poprzez odwołanie się do filozofii mechanicyzmu autor przekonuje, że charakterystyczne dla tej filozofii postrzeganie świata jest obecne w twórczości Adama Mickiewicza i Juliusza Słowackiego. Jako fundament swoich refleksji autor uznaje związek romantyzmu i rewolucji przemysłowej oraz procesów modernizacyjnych, korzystając z badań Johna Trescha oraz Paula Johnsona. W pierwszym rozdziale pokazuje na przykładach artykułów publicystycznych Adama Mickiewicza mechanistyczny sposób postrzegania świata. Na ich podstawie autor stara się udowodnić pragmatyczne podejście romantyka do rzeczywistości. Staje się to podstawą do wysunięcia tezy o mechanistycznym postrzeganiu środków komunikacji jak mediów-maszyn. W drugim rozdziale autor przedstawia problem języka romantyków, którego używali do opisywania nowych wynalazków technicznych XIX wieku. W mieszaniu kategorii organicznego i mechanicznego autor dostrzega pewien projekt zawiązywania wspólnoty podmiotów ludzkich i nieludzkich. Aby to opisać stosuje teorię Bruno Latoura dotyczącej procesu translacji oraz teorię Siegfrieda Zielinskiego dotyczącej roli interfejsów. Rozważania prowadzą do wniosku, że model krytyki, który opisuje epokę romantyzmu za pomocą opozycji jest niewystarczający do uchwycenia pewnych istotnych związków między romantyzmem a nowoczesnością. Praca jest próbą przekroczenia tego schematu literaturoznawczego (organiczne-mechaniczne) poprzez ukazanie istnienia aspektów mechanistycznych w twórczości romantyków.

The aim of this essay is to present the mechanistic aspects of romanticism. The author appeals to a philosophy of mechanicism to prove that the characteristic elements of this philosophy are present in writings of Adam Mickiewicz and Juliusz Słowacki. Author’s starting point is entanglement of romanticism and modernity (the Industrial Revolution) consisting in works of John Tresch and Paul Johnson. In the first chapter the author points in journalistic works of Adam Mickiewicz the mechanistic aspects of perception. On the grounds of chosen articles the author convinces that the poet was a pragmatist. This recognition leads to a thesis of romantic use of communication tools as the media-machines. In the second chapter the author shows unexplored before problem of language, which romantics employed to describing new technologies of nineteenth century. In the mixing of organic and mechanic categories the author sees some romantic concept of creating a community between human and nonhuman subjects. To illustrate this problem the author applies Bruno Latour’s theory of translation and Siegried Zielinski’s theory of interfaces. These considerations leads to conclusion that the model of literary critique, which based on oppositions is insufficient to comprehensive description of romanticism – in its aspects of entanglement with modernity. This study is an endeavor to overrun the scheme of the literary studies (organic-mechanic) through depicting mechanistic aspects of romanticism.
