Celem niniejszej pracy jest przeanalizowanie związku pomiędzy relatywizmem językowym oraz teorią przekładu. Rozdział pierwszy poświęcony jest historii powstania hipotezy Sapira-Whorfa na podstawie prac jej głównych twórców (Wilhelma von Humboldta, Edwarda Sapira, oraz Benjamina Lee Whorfa). Część pierwsza zakończona jest próbą opisania procesu tłumaczenia zgodnie z radykalnymi zasadami hipotezy. Celem rozdziału drugiego jest podważenie jej radykalizmu poprzez wskazanie elementów teorii uniwersaliów językowych obecnych w pracach twórców hipotezy. Jako mniej determinujące, przedstawione zostaje również ujęcie relatywizmu z perspektywy kognitywnej (na podstawie teorii R. W. Langackera oraz Elżbiety Tabakowskiej). Część trzecia skupia się na analizie fragmentu prozy w języku angielskim oraz jego tłumaczenia na język polski, aby wskazać, do jakiego stopnia na odmienny odbiór tekstów wpływają zarówno subiektywne decyzje tłumacza jak i odmienne wizje świata zawarte w obu językach. Omawianym fragmentem jest opowiadanie Neila Gaimana oraz jego tłumaczenie autorstwa Pauliny Braiter.

The aim of this work is to examine the relation between linguistic relativism and the theory of translation. The first chapter is devoted to the history of the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, based on the works of its main precursors and creators (Wilhelm von Humboldt, Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf). This part closes with an attempt to describe the idea of translation process along the rules of the Hypothesis. The second chapter aims at undermining the radical nature of the Hypothesis by pointing out the traces of universalism in the works of its creators. Subsequently, the less determining view on relativism is introduced, namely the cognitive perspective (based on the theory of R. W. Langacker and its interpretation by Elżbieta Tabakowska). The third chapter presents the analysis of the fragment of an Anglophone text and its translation into Polish. The study focuses on those differences in the conveyed images which stem from both the translator's subjective choices and the different world views embedded in the source and target languages. The analysed text is the short story written by Neil Gaiman and its translation by Paulina Braiter.
