Tematem pracy licencjackiej jest nowa metoda nauczania języków obcych: TPRS (Teaching Proficency Through Reading and Storytelling).
The licentiate project concentrates on the alternative and relatively new method of Second Language Acquisition, namely Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling. In TPR Storytelling lessons, students acquire language through listening to and reading short stories. The foundation of TPR Storytelling lies in Total Physical Response, developed by James Asher. Asher noticed the positive effect of physical movement on language acquisition and introduced approach where students are supposed to listen and respond to the teacher’s instructions. Even though TPR has been a success, a number of young students started to lose their enthusiasm during the class and teachers lacked ideas on how to introduce more advanced vocabulary using movement and gestures. In 1990 a Spanish teacher, Blaine Ray, found a solution to expanding classical TPR. Besides the use of commands and actions in the second language the teacher decided to add comprehensible and contextualised stories to the lesson plan and named his method Total Physical Response Storytelling. In his new approach, students first learn new vocabulary and structures through classical TPR and then they are exposed to comprehensible input through listening to stories. Every story must be meaningful and include vocabulary that students practise at the beginning of the lesson. The theoretical part of the project is divided into two sections: the first focuses on different views on second language acquisition in children and briefly describes the methodological history of language teaching with the aim of presenting the relationship between the previous methods and TPRS. This gives insight into the most important linguistic theories and pays special attention to the Total Physical Response theory developed by J. Asher, and Krashen’s Natural Approach. The second section presents the rules, procedures, and techniques of TPRS that are used in order to achieve fluency in the class. The aforementioned method, like all others, has both advantages and disadvantages and this project will examine both sides. The practical part of the thesis includes 5 original lesson plans based on the TPRS method, and their evaluation. In this section the author shares her own experience of the application of the method and also provides additional and practical information on TPRS that might not be included in the review of the literature.
