The following paper focuses on the issue of body perception by mothers and their daughters. Apart from the perception of their own body, this thesis also ponders self-esteem, social approbation, mass media and cultural norms, parental attitudes of mothers, as well as temperament measures of an individual. The aim of this thesis was to establish the relationship between mothers’ perception of their bodies and their daughters’ appraisal of their own bodies. Furthermore, the objective was to evaluate whether factors such as self-esteem, personality and social approbation influence the self-perception of mothers. The effect of mass media, as well as parental attitudes on the perception of themselves demonstrated by daughters was also examined. The research was conducted on a total of 62 women, which consisted of mothers and their daughters aged between 19 and 21 years old. The methodologies included: the Body Investment Scale, Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale, assessment questionnaire of Retrospective Parental Attitudes: “My Mother”, NEO-Five Factor Personality Inventory, questionnaire on social acceptance as well as the influence of media and cultural norms on perception of one’s body. All hypotheses presented in this paper have been proved albeit some only partially. |
