Najważniejszym celem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej było wskazanie głównych problemów i wyzwań stojących przed polskimi nauczycielami nauczającymi studentów- obcokrajowców w języku angielskim (głównie studentów programu Erasmus). Dokładnie określa też odpowiednie metody nauczania i materiały, wskazuje treści, tematy i źródła szczególnie pomocne w nauczaniu grup ludzi z różnych krajów i kultur. Najbardziej popularnymi metodami nauczania były dyskusje i prezentacje multimedialne. |

This thesis aims to identify main difficulties and challenges that Polish teachers face while teaching international students (mainly the students of Erasmus Programme) in English. It focuses on specific features of the international school’s environment and their impact on the teaching process. It also discusses effective ways of presenting and solving problems specific to this educational context. The theoretical part of the thesis refers to multinational environment in Polish universities, gives characteristics of international students (providing necessary definitions) and focuses on previous research conducted mainly in Australia. It also introduces several categories of international students’ problems and discusses them in detail. The empirical part summarises main problems faced by Polish teachers while teaching international students in English and presents the proposed solutions. Unlike much of the current research which is focused more on the teaching/learning process from the international students’ perspective, this study presents the problem from the teachers’ perspective, including teachers’ opinions, concerns and hints. All conclusions are based on experiences and opinions of the teachers who work with international students and who filled in a questionnaire or were interviewed. The study conducted for the purpose of this thesis attempted to answer three questions: What difficulties do teachers find while teaching international students in English? What is the impact of cultural diversity on the teaching/learning process? What solutions and methods are implemented to facilitate learning and communication between teacher teaching in English language and international students? Questionnaire and interviews used for this study were related to difficulties of the teachers teaching mixed groups of students. All teachers unanimously agreed that the cultural differences between students affect the teaching/ learning process. They admitted that teaching mixed classes is always a challenge and a great adventure for the teachers. This study points out the sources of the difficulties of foreign students in mastering school curriculum and ways to overcome them. It also serves to determine teaching methods, materials, content-topics and resources particularly helpful in teaching groups of people from different countries or cultures. It also reveals other crucial factors influencing the learning/teaching process in international environment such as differences in students’ educational background, differences between active and passive learning and differences in learning styles. The results of the study indicate that the main reasons for international students’ difficulties in the learning/teaching process are incomplete understanding of lectures and lack of confidence in English. Other very important factors are differences in students’ educational background (preferences for active or passive learning) and differences in learning styles. The most difficult skills in English to master by international students are writing (taking notes) and speaking. Teachers of mixed groups of students found special ways of making their lectures accessible by simplification of teaching techniques or changing the style of lecturing. The most popular teaching methods were discussions and power point presentations. |
