Olejki cytrusowe otrzymuje się z owoców różnych odmian cytryny, pomarańczy, grejpfruta, a także limonki i bergamotki metodą wytłaczania. Znalazły zastosowanie w gastronomii, kosmetologii, medycynie oraz niekonwencjonalnych metodach leczenia wielu schorzeń. Olejki cytrynowy i grejpfrutowy są stosowane w medycynie tradycyjnej w terapii schorzeń przewodu pokarmowego, górnych dróg oddechowych, układu sercowo-naczyniowego, a także jako środek uspokajający.W związku z tak szerokim spektrum wykorzystania olejku cytrynowego i grejpfrutowego w medycynie ludowej, zbadano jego działanie przeciwdrobnoustrojowe, przeciwzapalne, przeciwbólowe i uspokajające.Aktywność przeciwbakteryjną olejków cytrusowych potwierdzono wobec wielu gatunków bakterii Gram dodatnich i Gram ujemnych, natomiast aktywność przeciwgrzybiczą wobec pleśni i drożdży. Olejek z cytryny wykazywał największą aktywność bez względu na rodzaj patogenu. W badaniach własnych oceniono in vitro aktywność przeciwgrzybiczą olejku cytrynowego i grejpfrutowego wobec różnych gatunków dermatofitów z wykorzystaniem metody dyfuzyjno-krążkowej. Wyniki badań uzyskano w postaci wielkości stref zahamowania wzrostu badanych dermatofitów, wokół krążków nasączonych przygotowanymi stężeniami olejków.Strefy zahamowania wzrostu wobec 100% stężenia olejku cytrynowego mieściły się w zakresie 25-40 mm, wobec 50% stężenia w zakresie 16-35 mm, wobec 25% stężenia od 10 do 30 mm, natomiast 12,5% stężenie olejku cytrynowego było aktywne w zakresie 0-20 mm.W badaniu aktywności olejku grejpfrutowego, uzyskano wobec 100% stężenia strefy zahamowania wzrostu w zakresie 10-30 mm, wobec 50% stężenia w zakresie 8-25 mm, wobec 25% stężenia w zakresie 0-17 mm oraz dla 12,5% stężenia otrzymano strefy zahamowania wzrostu tylko dla jednego szczepu M. canis (13mm) i dla E. floccosum (10mm).Porównując aktywność olejku cytrynowego i grejpfrutowego stwierdzono, że aktywność olejku grejpfrutowego jest o połowę niższa w stosunku do aktywności olejku cytrynowego wobec badanych dermatofitów.Wysoka aktywność badanych olejków wobec grzybów dermatofitowych sugeruje możliwość wykorzystania ich w terapii skojarzonej z leczeniem ogólnym, różnych postaci klinicznych grzybic powierzchniowych.

Citrus oils obtained from the fruit of different varieties of lemons (Citrus lemon), oranges (Citrus aurantium ,Citrus sinensis), grapefruit (Citrus paradisi), lime (Citrus aurantifolia) and bergamot (Citrus aurentium var. Bergamia) extrusion. They have been used in gastronomy, cosmetology, medicine and unconventional methods of treatment. Lemon essential oil is used in traditional medicine in the treatment of: diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory and cardiovascular system , as well as a sedative.Given such a wide spectrum of using lemon and grapefruit essential oils in folk medicine, it has been tested and proven to be antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and sedative.The antibacterial activity of citrus essential oils was confirmed against a number of species of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and antifungal activity against molds and yeasts. Regardless of the type of pathogen, lemon essential oil showed the greatest antimicrobial activity, and grapefruit essential oil smallest inhibitory effects against growth of pathogens.The present study evaluated in-vitro antifungal activity of lemon and grapefruit essential oils against various species of dermatophytes by using disc-diffusion method.Results were obtained in the form of the size of inhibition zone of tested dermatophytes around the disks prepared with 100%, 50%, 25% and 12.5% of the concentration of essential oilThe size of the zone above the 8 mm was taken as the lowest activity against dermatophytes studied oils.Zones of inhibition of growth of the test strains against 100% of the concentration of lemon oil in the range of 25-40 mm as against 50% of the concentration in the range of 16-35 mm as against a 25% concentration of from 10 to 30 mm, while the 12.5% concentration of lemon oil was active against 9 strains in the range of 10 -20 mm.In the case of testing the activity of grapefruit essential oil were obtained against 100% of the concentration zone of growth inhibition in the range of 10-30 mm as against a 50% concentration of 8-25 mm, compared to 25% of the concentration in the range 0-17 mm and for the concentration of only 12.5% for one strain of M. canis (13mm), and E. floccosum (10mm).Comparing the activity of the essential oil of lemon and grapefruit essential oils, it was found that the activity of the grapefruit essential oil is almost half the relative activity of lemon essential oil.The high activity of the tested oils against dermatophytes suggests a possible use in combination with the general, oral treatment of different clinical forms of dermatophytosis.
