W niniejszej pracy autorka przy wykorzystaniu metodologii studiów nad pamięcią analizuje sposób, w jaki dwie amerykańskie powieści, "Przeminęło z wiatrem" Margaret Mitchell i "Absalomie, Absalomie!" Williama Faulknera, ukazują amerykańskie Południe. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawione są najważniejsze teorie wykorzystywane przez studia nad pamięcią, przede wszystkim koncepcja pamięci zbiorowej Maurice Halbwachsa, pojęcie pamięci komunikacyjnej i pamięci kulturowej Jana Assmanna, oraz idea miejsc pamięci Nory. Teorie te zostają wykorzystane do badania problematyki związanej a amerykańskim Południem oraz jego literaturą. Autorka skupia się na "Przeminęło z wiatrem" Margaret Mitchell oraz "Absalomie, Absalomie!" Williama Faulknera ponieważ obydwie powieści miały znaczący wpływ na amerykańską pamięć kulturową. Autorka najpierw opisuje kontekst kulturowy związany z wytworzeniem się mitu Starego Południa. Następnie autorka interpretuję reprezentację Yoknapatawphy jako miejsca, w którym krystalizuje się pamięć o Starym Południu, oraz pokazuje obsesję przeszłością, w którą popadają bohaterowie powieści Williama Faulknera. Następnie analizowany jest sposób, w jaki Stare Południe jest przedstawione w powieści Williama Faulknera. Na koniec autorka zauważa, że zarówno Margaret Mitchell jak i William Faulkner widzą przyczyny upadku Południa w nienawiści rasowej. W ten sposób Mitchell i Faulkner dają odpowiedź na pytanie dotyczące przyczyn upadku Starego Południa. Ich powieści są wglądem w świadomość ludzi żyjących w latach 30 XX wieku i pomagają zrozumieć ich mentalność. Pokazują również, że dla społeczeństwa amerykańskiego Południa nie ma czegoś takiego jak przeszłość ponieważ w ich świecie przeszłość i teraźniejszość są ze sobą nierozerwalnie związane.

In this Master's Thesis the author analyses the representation of the American South in Margaret Mitchell's "Gone with the Wind" and William Faulkner's "Absalom, Absalom!" in the perspective of Memory Studies. The author begins with an overview of the theories that are used in Memory Studies. She is particularly interested in Maurice Hlbwachs's concept of collective memory, Jan Assmann's notion of communicative and cultural memory, as well as Pierre Nora's idea of sites of memory. She states that these theories can be used in an analysis of the American South and its literature. She decides to focus of Margaret Mitchell's "Gone with the Wind" and William Faulkner's "Absalom, Absalom!" because both novels had a great influence of American cultural memory. Before the analysis of these novels the author describes the cultural context connected to the creation of the myth of the Old South and the Lost Cause. Then she moves to a discussion of "Gone with the Wind". The author describes the circumstances of the creation of Gone with the Wind and points out that by writing her novel Margaret Mitchell has transferred her family's communicative memory into cultural memory. Then an analysis of the novel is provided in which the author describes the way in which Gone with the Wind portrays the antebellum South (represented by Tara) and interprets the novel's portrayal of the Civil War and Reconstruction. In the next chapter William Faulkner's "Absalom, Absalom!" is interpreted. The author, just like in the case of Margaret Mitchell, provides a biographical and cultural context. Then she analyses the narrative pattern of "Absalom, Absalom!" and points out that it reflects the hardships of the reconstruction of memory. Then she describes William Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha as a land haunted by memory and shows how obsessed by the past are characters of William Faulkner's "Absalom! Absalom!". After that, she analyses the main characters and the representation of the antebellum South in the novel. Finally, she reaches a conclusion that for both Margaret Mitchell and William Faulkner the ultimate tragedy of the Old South – and the reason for its downfall – was miscegenation. Thus both Faulkner and Mitchell give an answer to the question about the downfall of the Old South. Their novels provide an unique insight into historical consciousness of the people of the 1930s and help to understand southern mindset. They also show that for the southern society of the 1930s there was no such thing as the past because it constantly existed in the present.
