Niniejsza praca dotyczy twórczości Wasyla Stefanyka, jednego z przedstawicieli ukraińskiego modernizmu. Tematyką jest obraz Ukraińca, jaki został zaprezentowany w nowelach tego pisarza. Obraz ten jest ograniczony terytorialnie do terenów Królestwa Galicji i Lodomerii na przełomie wieku XIX i XX. Wasyl Stefanyk był zaliczany do twórców modernizmu ukraińskiego, jednak stworzył on swój własny, indywidualny styl pisania. Rozdział pierwszy przedstawia osobę Wasyla Stefanyka i czasy, w których tworzył. W swojej twórczości zajmuje się głównie problematyką ubogich, ukraińskich chłopów. Jego styl czerpie z ówcześnie panujących prądów literackich, jego nowele mają wymiar zarówno ekspresjonistyczny, jak i symboliczny. Rozdział drugi to historia Galicji w latach 1848 – 1914 z podziałem na sytuację polityczna, gospodarczą i społeczną. Trzeci rozdział to opis bohaterów występujących w nowelach Wasyla Stefanyka. Tematyka jego nowel ściśle wiąże się z ówczesną sytuacją panującą w zaborze austriackim. Bohaterowie nowel Wasyla Stefanyka to Ukraińcy, warstwa chłopska. Są oni przedstawieni przez pryzmat jednego przełomowego wydarzenia, które zmienia ich życie. Bohaterowie to głównie chłopi, bezsilni rolnicy, którzy toczą nierówną, nieraz przegraną walkę, aby utrzymać przy życiu siebie i swoje rodziny, co często kończy się tragicznie. Pojawiają się również kobiety, przede wszystkim, jako opiekunki domowego ogniska, choć również w roli niewiernych żon. Kolejnym typem bohatera jest dziecko. Zostało przedstawione przez pryzmat trudnego dzieciństwa, pozostawione bez opieki rodziców, przymierające głodem, osierocone, przedwcześnie dojrzałe. Wasyl Stefanyk w swych nowelach nie komentuje w żaden sposób postępowania swoich bohaterów ani sytuacji, w jakiej się znaleźli. Nowela Wasyla Stefanyka to pojedynczy obraz bohater, który staje się symbolem ogólnej sytuacji i całościowego obrazu Ukraińca galicyjskich czasów.

This study concerns the output of Vasyl Stefanyk, a representative of the Ukrainian modernist literature. It presents a Ukrainian's picture put forward in his short stories. This picture is territorially limited to the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria at the turn of the 19th century. Vasyl Stefanyk is considered as the Ukrainian modernism representative, however, he has created his own, individual style of writing. The first chapter presents Vasyl Stefanyk and the days when he was writing. His output concerns mostly the subject of impoverished Ukrainian peasants. His writing style takes inspiration from the contemporary literature movements and his short stories have a both expressionist and symbolic dimension. The second chapter delivers the story of Galicia between 1848 and 1914, from a political, economic and social perspective. The third chapter analyses the characters described in Vasyl Stefanyk's short stories. The subject of his stories is closely linked with the conditions prevailing under Austrian rule at the time. The characters described in Vasyl Stefanyk's short stories are Ukrainian peasants. They are presented through one significant breakthrough that changes their lives. The protagonists are mostly peasants, powerless farmers, who fight an uneven, often losing battle to keep themselves and their families alive, the stories often end tragically. Women are often portrayed, most often as the ones who take care of their homes and families, sometimes, however, as unfaithful wives. Another type of depicted character is a child. It was presented from the angle of difficult childhood, left behind by their parents, a precocious, starving orphan. In his short stories, Vasyl Stefanyk does not comment on the behaviour of the characters, nor the situation they are in, in any way. A Vasyl Stefanyk's short story is a single protagonist, who becomes a symbol and comprehensive picture of Galician Ukrainians' general situation
