During the last few years the Visegrad Group’s defence cooperation became an important part of the Visegrad Group’s agenda. Even with the rift on the Group’s unity over the particular V4 countries approach towards Russia in the wake of its aggression on Ukraine and the returning questions of the future of the very Visegrad cooperation its defence part, possibly being the most difficult and demanding great levels of trust and political will, is still proceeding. The V4 countries, whether within the Group or separately, since the beginning of their Euro-Atlantic aspirations treat NATO as the main assurance of their security and try to prove themselves as reliable allies. However it is not NATO but the European Union and its Common Defence and Security Policy which tools the Visegrad Group is using in the most visible parts of its defence cooperation – the joint expeditionary forces. The V4 EU Battlegroup, which will be on standby during the first semester of 2016, is a high readiness, rapid response military force operating within the EU Battlegroups framework that can be used by the European Union in case of a crisis management operation and deployed to a theatre of emerging conflict far away from its borders. The EU Battlegroups are a unique tool in the EU’s inventory designed to allow it to take bigger responsibility in the international sphere and act in the event of deteriorating security situation in the world of globalized security environment and interrelations. This work attempts to answer the question why did the Visegrad Group choose the CSDP’s framework for the most visible aspects of its defence cooperation and investigates the correlation between the developments in the security and defence discussion in Europe and the condition of the Visegrad defence cooperation in its environment. To achieve this goal the evolution of the defence and security cooperation in Europe and the topic of the EU Battlegroups are examined. Similarly, the aspect of the Visegrad Group’s defence cooperation are studied together with the process of the V4 EU Battlegroup creation.
