Pojęcie doppelgängera jest jednym z najczęściej używanych w światowej literaturze. Zarówno w Doktor Jekyll i Pan Hyde Roberta Louisa Stevensona oraz Wyznania usprawiedliwionego grzesznika przez niego samego spisane Jamesa Hogga są przykładowymi przedstawieniami tego motywu i pokazują kształtowanie się i rozwój podwójnej osobowości, pozwalając czytelnikowi dogłębny wgląd do ludzkiego umysłu. Psychoanaliza, jako jedna z najbardziej odpowiadających dziedzin zarówno w psychologii, jak i w krytycyźmie literackim, wyjaśnia rozwój głównych bohaterów oraz ich mrocznych sobowtórów w zorganizowany i sklasyfikowany sposób.Celem tej pracy magisterskiej jest ukazanie jak pojęcie doppelgängera zaprezentowane jest w obu książkach z punktu widzenia psychoanalizy. Zdecydowałam się skupić na trzech pojęciach psychoanalizy rozwiniętych przez Zygmunta i Annę Freud oraz Carla Gustavsa Junga: teorię struktury ludzkiego umysłu, teorię archetypów oraz teorię mechanizmów obronnych. Główni bohaterowie obu książek poddani są dokładnej analizie, podczas której akceptują swoją dwoistość oraz stają się jej świadomi. Psychoanaliza jest dodatkowym narzędziem, dzięki któremu doświadczenia bohaterów mogą być zrozumiane, opisane i sklasyfikowane.

The concept of the doppelgänger is one of the most popular themes in literature worldwide. Both The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson and The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner by James Hogg are almost exemplary representations of this motif and show the formation and the development of a divided personality allowing the reader in-depth insights into a human mind. Psychoanalysis, as one of the most appealing fields in both psychology and literary criticism, clarifies the development of the protagonists and their dark double in an organizing and categorizing manner. The thesis analyses how the notion of doppelgänger is presented in both novels in the psychoanalytical point of view. I decided to focus on three aspects of psychoanalysis developed by Sigmund and Anna Freud as well as Carl Gustav Jung which lend themselves to the analysis of the dark double in literature: the mind structure theory, the archetype theory and the study of the defense mechanisms. The presentations of the two characters in the novels are subjected to a close analysis of the ways in which they come to terms with their duality and in which they deal with their realization. Psychoanalysis supplies tools with which their experiences can be understood, described and categorized.
