Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza graficznej serii "Katedra" Lucjana Mianowskiego i osadzenie jej w kontekście przemian w grafice polskiej w latach 1956-1963. |

The aim of the following thesis is to analyze Lucjan Mianowski’s "Cathedral" graphic series created in the period between 1959 and 1963 and to place it in the context of the changes occurring in Polish graphics in the 1956-1963 period. The first part of the thesis contains the preliminary information about the "Cathedral" series, that is its historic outline and the state of research, the description of the works which are included in the series as well as the analysis in regard to technological and formal aspects. In the second part it was attempted to place the series in Polish historic and artistic context, pointing out the features of these work which are in relation to the tendencies and changes in the world graphics at that time. The cathedral theme in Mianowski's work was discussed separately. The creation of the "Cathedral" series dates back to the period of the changes in Polish graphics, which entered modernity as one could observe general artistic revival in a new political situation in the second half of the fifties. The series was made by Lucjan Mianowski in years 1959-1963, right after he got back from the scholarship in Paris. It was basically created by the means of lithography technique, along with metal and photographic techniques. The analysis of the prints and matrices allowed to characterize the author’s multi-aspectual technique, in which the creative process is concerned with each stage of creating the work, including the printing. A varied way of creating the image on the matrices is characteristic (basically without any tools traditionally used in lithography), strict correlation of images obtained on matrices and lateral mult-icolour overprints. Within the formal analysis the following artistic means applied by Mianowski were characterized: the trace which is soft, flat and exhibits the graphic medium, photographs processed by the graphic medium and integrated with other traces, drawings and the impression of spaciousness and ‘relief’ which may be observed on some prints. Those means were also shown from the perspectives of the viewer’s perception. Due to the fact that there Lucjan Mianowski did not produce any theoretical consideration on his own works, and the state of research on graphics in the second half of the twentieth century is scarce, the point of departure was conversations with contemporary artists who knew Mianowski. The further part of the thesis refers to Mianowski’s work itself and theoretical texts concerned graphics by Karol Hiller’s, English edition of Stanley William Hayter’s manuals and Jean Dubuffet’s texts written in French. In French historic and artistic context the theoretical foundations for surrealism, "informe "and "art brut" were presented as well as new tendencies in graphics connected with the change of the format of prints, the introduction of colour to the graphic workshop as an element of creation, the variety of ways to create images on matrices by the means of methods which allow for random actions as well as searching for new artistic tools. A separate chapter was dedicated to Jean Dubuffet’s trace theory and his considerations on the topic of lithographic medium. The Polish context takes into account the beginnings of modernism in the post-war art, the changes occurring in artistic graphics which are connected with this period and are the reflection of the tendencies present in Western art. What has become the foundation for the interpretation of the cathedral theme in Mianowski’s work is the author’s juxtaposition of the cathedral’s image and the meaning that was given to a Gothic cathedral in the Middle-Ages, "informe" concept, Jean Dubuf-fet’s trace theory and surrealism, as well as Victor Hugo’s literary take on the matter. |
