Determinations of religious suicides in the chosen cultures in the 20th century. Comparative analysis

Samobójstwa religijne są znane z podań historycznych i z mitologii. Ta praca jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie w jakiej formie ten fenomen religijny objawiał się w XX wieku. Praca prezentuje historię samobójstw religijnych, najważniejsze hipotezy na ich temat oraz porównawczo je analizuje. Omówione zostały trzy charakterystyczne dla XX wieku zjawiska: jednostki samobójcze w Japonii, pięć zbiorowych samobójstw w Nowych Ruchach Religijnych (NRR) oraz samobójcze zamachy terrorystyczne. Te samobójstwa, wyrosłe w tak różnych tradycjach religijnych, łączą wspólne wierzenia dotyczące efektów tych działań. Samobójcy wyobrażają sobie, że ich czyn zmieni świat zewnętrzny. Wierzą także, że poprzez odebranie sobie życia osiągną korzyści dla siebie, a także dla innych wyznawców. Ponadto wszyscy zakładają, że ofiara z życia pozwoli nawiązać relację z siłą nadprzyrodzoną. Samobójstwa religijne wiążą świat profaniczny ze światem sakralnym.

The religious suicides are known from history and mythology. This thesis is trying to answer the question in what forms this religious phenomenon was present in the 20th century. The thesis presents the history of religious suicides, the most important hypotheses about them and analyze them in a comparative approach. Three phenomena typical for the 20th century are presented: suicide units in Japan, five of collective suicides in New Religious Movements and suicidal terrorists attacks. These suicides, originating from so many different religious traditions, share common beliefs regarding its expected effects. The suicides imagine that their act will change the outside world. They also believe that by sacrificing their own lives, they reach benefits for themselves. In addition, all of them assume that the sacrifice of life will help to establish a relationship with a supernatural force. The religious suicides associate the profane world with the sacred world.
