W niniejszej pracy omówiono stan wiedzy na temat zmian stężenia selenu w przebiegu cukrzycy oraz wpływ tego pierwiastka na ryzyko rozwoju choroby. Przeprowadzone dotychczas badania dostarczają wiele informacji, jednak prezentowane wnioski nie są jednoznaczne i wiele zagadnień pozostaje wciąż niewyjaśnionych. Konieczne jest przeprowadzenie dalszych badań, które określą zależność przyczynowo-skutkową i wyjaśnią czy zmiany stężenia selenu u chorych na cukrzycę przyczyniają się do powstawania choroby poprzez zakłócenia w produkcji bądź wydzielaniu insuliny, czy może raczej zaburzony metabolizm węglowodanów u diabetyków skutkuje zmianą gospodarki mineralnej w ich organizmie.

The paper presents the state of knowledge about the changes in the concentration of selenium in diabetes and the impact of this element to the risk of development of the disease. Investigations to date have delivered increasing amount of data, but presented results are not clear and many issues still remain unsolved. It is necessary to conduct further research to determine the cause-effect and explain whether the changes in the concentration of selenium in diabetes have a role in contributing to formation of disease by disruption in production or secretion of insulin, or rather, disturbed carbohydrate metabolism in diabetic patients causes some changes of mineral status in the body.
