The subject of this thesis is the analysis of the factors that have had an influence on the changes in the tea drinking custom over the centuries, both in China and during the process of spreading the tea culture to the other parts of the world. The first chapter presents selected cultural and sociological theories and concepts that are crucial to understand the subject of this paper. The second chapter contains the description of the great philosophical and religious systems that had an enormous influence on the shaping of the Chinese culture in general, including tea culture. Tea, undoubtedly, is one of the most characteristic elements of the Chinese culture. The way of tea from the therapeutic use, through the role in the sacred sphere, up to its role in everyday life of the Chinese people is complex and multifaceted, which makes it extraordinarily noteworthy. The last chapter presents the context of spreading the tea culture in Europe. This part of the thesis contains also a comparative analysis of the Chinese tea drinking custom and the ones functioning in England and India. The point of the thesis is to find an answer for the question: to what extent have the changes of the Chinese drinking custom been caused by the changes that occurred in the Chinese society, especially the ones generated by the philosophical and religious streams? The second aim of this paper is to qualify, whether - and to what extent - the elements of the Chinese tea culture may be seen in the English and Indian tea culture today. |
