Folic acid is an extremely important component of the diet responsible for our body’s proper functioning. Delivering the folic acid to the body along with food helps reducing the risk of its deficiency and sometimes prevents other serious cardiovascular diseases, nervous system diseases and digestive tract cancer. The aim of the study was to determine the amount of folic acid in the diet of patients with diseases belonging to the inflammatory bowel disease group. Moreover, the paper examined the eating habits of the respondents and their preferences and attempted to determine if the products contraindicated in IBD cause any ailments of the gastrointestinal tract to everyone. The study involved 40 patients of the department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University Hospital in Krakow. The study used a questionnaire containing 48 questions and a sheet of 93 products containing folic acid, from which the patients chose the ones they had consumed least often in a duration of a month and selected a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’ depending on which product they thought contained folic acid. It has been shown that the minimum amount of folic acid in the diet of patients is insufficient (102.11 mg per day) and that their eating habits are inadequate. The level of knowledge on the occurrence of folic acid in foods is also average.
