Studium postaci pishtaco w kulturze ludowej Peru stanowi przyczynek do analizy wierzeń Indian andyjskich, ukształtowanych w okresie od XVI wieku do czasów współczesnych. Pishtaco jest bytem o dużej popularności w wierzeniach, folklorze oraz potocznej świadomości mieszkańców Andów. Podstawową cechą jego aktywności jest zabijanie Indian przez dekapitację, a następnie wytapianie z nich tłuszczu, który sprzedaje odbiorcom w miastach i za granicą. W myśl indiańskich wierzeń tłuszcz ten używany jest do celów medyczno-kosmetycznych, wzmacnia głos dzwonów oraz zasila urządzenia techniczne. Różne warianty wyglądu pishtaco stanowią personifikacje wrogów Indian runa, a transfer indiańskiego tłuszczu poza ekumenę Andów odzwierciedla w symbolicznym języku mitu wielowiekową relację wyzysku, akulturacji i fizycznego zagrożenia egzystencji Indian przez hiszpańskich kolonizatorów, Metysów oraz współczesnych białych gringos. Pishtaco nie przynależy w pełni do kategorii istot, zdefiniowanych przez etnografię i religioznawstwo, gdyż jest śmiertelny, a zarazem posiada cechy duchowe, demoniczne oraz zsynkretyzowane z elementami chrześcijańskimi. Jest elementem legend przeszłości, lecz także współczesnej rzeczywistości, gdyż może zaistnieć w dowolnym człowieku, jeśli Indianie uznają go za pishtaco. Stanowi fenomen kultury duchowej Andów. Praca jest próbą zarysowania andyjskiego tła kulturowego, podłoża mitycznego, a także czynników historycznych oraz mechanizmów psychospołecznych, które doprowadziły do ukształtowania się postaci pishtaco. Stara się odpowiedzieć na pytanie: "Czym jest pishtaco?", badając tą postać w kontekstach tradycyjnej kultury Andów, mitologii prekolumbijskiej i millenarystycznej, oraz jej roli w symbolizacji antagonistycznych relacji międzykulturowych - w czasach historycznych oraz współczesnych.

The study of the character of the pishtaco in the folk culture of Peru forms a foundation to analyse the beliefs of Andean Indians, that have been shaping from the XVI century till the contemporary times. Pishtaco is a creature of a huge popularity in beliefs, folk and the everyday consciesness of the Andean inhabitants. The main feature of his activity is killing Indians by decapitation and then rendering lard of them. The obtained lard is sold to the buyers in large cities and outside the country. According to the Indians' beliefs the mentioned lard is used for the medical and cosmetic purposes, it also makes stronger the noise of the church bells and supply the techincal devices.The different variants of the pishtaco's look constitute the personification of the Indians' enemies (runa's ememies), and the transfer of the Indians' lard outside the area of the Andes reflect, in the symbolic language of the myths, the long relation of exploitation, acculturation and physical threat of the Indians' existance by the Spanish colonists, the Mestizos and the contemporary white gringos. The pishtaco does not belong totally to the category of the creatures defined by the ethnography and the religious studies, because on one hand he is mortal and on the other he possesses the spiritual and demonic characteristics syncretized at the same time with the christian elements . He is both an element of the past legends and the contemporary reality, since he can arise in every human being, if and when the Indians regard them as a pishtaco. He is a phenomenon of the spiritual culture of the Andes. The following thesis is an attempt of present the Andean cultural and mythological background, as well as historical elements and the psychosocial mechanics that led to create the character of the pishtaco. It attempts to answer the question: ''Who or what is the pishtaco?, studying this creature in the contexts of traditional Andean culture, precolombian and millenarian mythology, and its role as a symbol of the antagonistic intercultural relations in the historical times as well as in the present -day.
