System Monitorowania Zagrożeń chorób zakaźnych w Polsce jest określony głównie przez ustanowione akty podstawowe jakimi są ustawy. Najważniejszą ustawą regulującą monitorowanie chorób zakaźnych jest ustawa z dnia 5 grudnia 2008 r. o zapobieganiu oraz zwalczaniu zakażeń i chorób zakaźnych u ludzi. Aby analiza przedmiotu była wyraźnie wytłumaczona i pełna, do ustawy powstały także akty wykonawcze uchwalone przez Ministra Zdrowia, którymi są rozporządzenia. Ważne jest aby sytuacja epidemiologiczna kraju była kontrolowana na poziomie zgodnym z zaleceniami prawa. To dzięki nim zostały sprecyzowane pojęcia, które pozwalają na podejmowanie odpowiednich działań dotyczących zagrożenia spowodowanego chorobami zakaźnymi. Dzięki przeanalizowaniu sytuacji systemu wprowadzonego w kraju, możliwe jest stworzenie prostego schematu przepływu informacji dotyczących zgłaszalności podejrzeń i rozpoznań chorób zakaźnych.
