Contemporary field of medical and an every day technology is going through unimpeded progress. Pessimistic visions concerning future anxieties about the possible direction in which this technology is going to be developed are an expression of a new literary and cinematic genre called cyberpunk. Such genre had emerged in the 1980s and manifested its presence mainly in the United States and Japan. In the USA it became a part of the techno-orientalist discourse which was born from the Western prejudiced way of thinking dealing with the image of Japan as dehumanized metropolis and the Japanese as Technological Other. These deeply rooted in the subconscious prejudices are a continuation of the legacy of orientalism. The aim of this thesis is to explore the genre’s main problematic aspects , to explain its presence in techno-orientalism and to define concepts which are constitutive for this subject. Such as the problem of the identity and the blurring of the boundaries between human and mechanical. This thesis will also analyze the canonical works of Japanese cinema as well as two American movies – Blade Runner and The Matrix – which fulfill techno-orientalist theory.
