The Heterotopia of Transylvania. The Experience of the Romanian-Hungarian-German Cultural Borderland

Praca podejmuje próbę dogłębnego opisu stosunków międzyetnicznych w pogranicznym regionie Transylwanii w kontekście wydarzeń historycznych oraz dyskusji nad regionalizmem literackim. Refleksja nad kwestiami tożsamościowymi koncentruje się na sytuacji spotkania z odmiennością kulturową. Część analityczna poświęcona jest powieści Eginalda Schlattnera „Fortepian we mgle” stanowiącej bazę dla przemyśleń nad problemem stereotypów narodowych, rolą traumatycznych wydarzeń w kształtowaniu międzyludzkich relacji oraz nad zagadnieniem postpamięci.

This dissertation attempts at in-depth description of interethnic relations in a borderland region of Transylvania in the context of historical events and discussions on literary regionalism. Reflection on the issue of identity concentrates on the situation of meeting with a cultural dissimilarity. The analytical part is devoted to Eginald Schlattner’s novel “The Piano in the Fog” which is the base to consideration on the problem of national stereotypes, the role of traumatic experiences in moulding human relationships and the issue of postmemory.
