W okresie Edo (1600-1868), na który przypada rozkwit kultury mieszczańskiej, popularność zyskały opowieści o duchach i potworach zwane kaidan. Ich bohaterkami niejednokrotnie bywały zjawy kobiet, których wizerunki uzależnione były od kilku czynników. Poza wpływami buddyjskimi i sintoistycznymi, pozostającymi w ścisłym związku z tematem śmierci, na wyobrażenia kobiecych duchów wpłynęła przede wszystkim filozofia konfucjańska (V w. p.n.e.), a w szczególności jej późniejsza forma – neokonfucjanizm (rozpowszechniony w okresie Edo) oraz stanowiący jego podwalinę – patriarchalny system społeczny. Bohaterki opowieści grozy padały często ofiarami owego systemu, głoszącego całkowite posłuszeństwo kobiet wobec mężczyzn oraz ich podrzędną pozycję w społeczeństwie. Wykorzystywane i krzywdzone przez mężczyzn, nie mogące dochodzić swoich praw w doczesnym świecie, kobiety powracały do świata żywych po śmierci przede wszystkim po to, aby dokonać aktu zemsty

In the Edo period (1600-1868), which accounts for a period of flourishing urban culture, the popularity gained tales of ghosts and monsters called kaidan. Their representative often had apparitions of women, and their image was dependent on several factors. Besides buddhist and shintoist influences which have been in close connection with the subject of death, the idea of women's spirits were mainly impacted by Confucian philosophy (from the fifth century), and in particular the later form - neoconfucianism (popular in the Edo period). It happened because the heroine of horror stories often fell victims of this patriarchal social system that preached obedience of women to men and their subordinate position in society. The reason why women’s ghosts returned to the living world, was the desire of revenge for earthly injuries, but they also sometimes come with other intentions. Images of female spirits inspired the theatrical and films scenarios. This type of form can also be found in the ukiyo-e woodcuts, in painting and in contemporary forms of art and literature, such as horror movies or animated series.
