The main aim of the paper is to present and discuss the epicedium (carmina funebria) written in Latin by Jan Rybiński after Friedrich Widebram’s death (2 May 1585). Widebram, also known as Widbram and Widebrand, was Professor of Theology at the University of Heidelberg and a poet renowned in early modern Europe for his Latin paraphrase of the Psalms (Psalterium Davidis integrum carmine redditum, Strasbourg 1579). He was also held in great esteem, especially by his students who were interested in composing Latin poetry, for his mastery of the elegiac verse. Rybiński’s epicedium consists of three sections: an elegy - a dramatic dialogue between two allegorical figures, Mother Earth (Tellus) and her son the Gravedigger (Fossor), the epitaph - three elegiac couplets which amplify the funeral topic hic iacet ('here lies…'), and a chronogram in the form of distich whose some particular letters, when treated as numerals, spell out the date of Widebram’s death (2 May 1585). The poem eulogizes Wideram as a wise man (elegy), a second Simeon taking good care of Christ’s doctrine (epitaph), and a pious old man whose star shines brightly after his death (chronogram).
