The subject of this thesis is an image of Central Europe in the literature. The concept of Central Europe is discussed in the context of essays written by Milan Kundera, Drago Jancar and Gyorgy Konrad. This is a starting point for further considerations on the three books of Andrzej Stasiuk: Moja Europa. Dwa eseje o Europie zwanej Srodkowa [My Europe. Two Essays on Europe, called the Central (here: Logbook)], Jadac do Babadag (On the road to Babadag) and Fado. Based on the writer's texts, which are his personal project of Central Europe, the analysis is subject to the role of memory in writing, Central Europe as a place situated at the crossroads of Eastern and Western cultures, the influence of western culture on central Europeans, and the role of history and national myths in define the identity of the region inhabitants. Then is discussed the image of Central Europe in book called Podróż na Alaskę (Journey to Alaska) written by Bora Cosic. The writer with a critical eye looks at the current reality of this part of Europe referring it to the past. Journeyl to Alaska analysis focuses on such issues as the role of history, traditions, juxtaposed with the nationalism of former Yugoslavia countries. Both Stasiuk and Cosic, show some common characteristics of people from Central Europe. These include the provincialism, the creation and belief in the myths, passivity toward the world and their own destiny. Among the inhabitants of Central Europe there are attitudes like nationalism or withdrawal from their own culture in favor of capitalism and mass culture. Both images of Central Europe (presented by Stasiuk Ćosić) are subjective and personal perception of this part of Europe and identity of central Europeans.

Przedmiotem badawczym niniejszej pracy jest obraz Europy Środkowej w literaturze. Pojęcie Europa Środkowa zostaje omówione w kontekście esejów Milana Kundery, Drago Jančara i György Konráda. Stanowi to punkt wyjścia do dalszych rozważań dotyczących trzech książek Andrzeja Stasiuka: Moja Europa. Dwa Eseje o Europie Zwanej Środkową (tutaj: Dziennik okrętowy), Jadąc do Babadag oraz Fado. W oparciu o teksty pisarza, które stanowią jego osobisty projekt Europy Środkowej, analizie podlega rola pamięci, Europa Środkowa jako miejsce znajdujące się na styku kultur Wschodu i Zachodu, wpływ zachodnich wzorców na środkowych Europejczyków oraz rola historii i mitów narodowych w kształtowaniu się tożsamości mieszkańców regionu. Drugim omawianym wizerunkiem Europy Środkowej jest Podróż na Alaskę Ćosicia. Pisarz, wspominając przeszłość, krytycznym okiem spogląda na obecną rzeczywistość tej części Europy. Analiza Podróży na Alaskę skupia się na takich zagadnieniach jak rola przeszłości, tradycji, zestawiona z wszechobecnym w krajach byłej Jugosławii nacjonalizmem. Zarówno Stasiuk, jak i Ćosić, wskazują na pewne cechy wspólne mieszkańców Europy Środka. Należą do nich prowincjonalność, tworzenie i wiara w mity narodowe, bierność wobec świata i własnego losu. Wśród mieszkańców Europy Środkowej pojawiają się postawy skrajne jak nacjonalizm czy rezygnacja z własnej kultury na rzecz kapitalizmu i kultury masowej. Obydwa obrazy Europy Środkowej (Stasiuka i Ćosicia) subiektywnie przedstawiają tę część Europy i tożsamość jej mieszkańców.
