Orthodoxy in Bialystok region as a borderline religion: tradition and present day.

Niniejsza praca ma za zadanie przedstawić syntezę prawosławia w regionie Białostocczyzny z uwzględnieniem miejsc szczególnego kultu i świętości. Jednocześnie stanowi próbę zbadania współczesnego pojmowania tożsamości i tolerancji w kontekście prawosławia i problematyki z nimi związanych. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów. W pierwszym scharakteryzowano prawosławie w Polsce i regionie na przestrzeni dziejów. Sporo miejsca zajmuje kwestia unii brzeskiej i efektów jej postanowień. Drugi rozdział, poświęcony jest najważniejszym miejscom kultu dla prawosławnych na omawianym obszarze. Scharakteryzowano monaster w Supraślu oraz Świętą Górę Grabarkę jako współczesne, główne ośrodki pątnicze. Z kolei, rozdział trzeci dotyczy aktualnych problemów prawosławia na pograniczu, jakim jest teren Białostocczyzny: stereotypów, poczucia tożsamości, tolerancji i nietolerancji o podłożu religijnym oraz kwestii zawierania małżeństw mieszanych, prawosławno-katolickich i problemów z tym związanych. Osobne miejsce zajmuje również rola Bractwa Młodzieży Prawosławnej jako organizacji kształtującej świadomość religijną młodego pokolenia. Całość stanowi ogólną charakterystykę współczesnego pojmowania prawosławia w regionie Białostocczyzny z uwzględnieniem historii i tradycji.

This study aims to present a synthesis of Orthodoxy in the Bialystok region, and includes the special places of worship and holiness. At the same time this thesis is an attempt to explore the contemporary understanding of identity and tolerance in the context of Orthodoxy and the problems associated with them. The work consists of three chapters. The first characterizes Orthodoxy in Poland and the Bialystok region throughout the history. The Union of Brest and the effects of its provisions have been widely discussed. The second chapter is devoted to the most important places of worship for Orthodox Christians in the area. The monastery in Suprasl and the holy mountain of Grabarka, the main centers of pilgrimage nowadays, have been characterized. In turn, the third chapter concerns the current problems on the border of the Orthodox Church, which is the area of Bialystok: stereotypes, identity, tolerance and intolerance based on the religion and the question of mixed marriages, Catholic and Orthodox-related problems. The separate topic is also the role of the Fellowship of Orthodox Youth in Poland shaping religious consciousness of the young generation. The whole is a general understanding of the characteristics of modern Orthodoxy in the Bialystok region, taking into account the history and tradition.
