Celem mojej pracy magisterskiej jest analiza przykładów realizmu magicznego w twórczości Toni Morrison, zwłaszcza w powieściach Pieśń Salomonowa i Umiłowana. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiam historię realizmu magicznego - od jego początków związanych z rozwojem surrealizmu i nowego obiektywizmu w malarstwie, poprzez jego rozwój w powieści latynoamerykańskiej, aż po współczesne teorie przedstawiające tę technikę literacką jako zjawisko globalne i charakterystyczne dla pisarstwa postkolonialnego. Posługuję się definicją Wendy B. Faris zawierającą pięć cech charakterystycznych dla realizmu magicznego i podaję przykłady z różnych powieści Toni Morrison. Następnie analizuję użycie realizmu magicznego w Pieśni Salomonowej. Elementy magiczne związane są z przeszłością etniczną i rodzinną, okazują się nośnikami afroamerykańskiej tożsamości kulturowej. W ostatnim rozdziale przedstawiam różne istniejące interpretacje Umiłowanej, jako powieści historycznej a zarazem gotyckiej historii o duchach.

In my MA thesis I would like to analyze how Toni Morrison uses magical elements in her novels, especially in Song of Solomon and Beloved. I chose these two positions, because they share the same themes: a discovery and an evaluation of the communal and individual past. In the first chapter I present the theoretical background to my thesis, the historical outline of the development of magical realism and Wendy B. Faris’ fivefold definition of magical realist literary technique supported with examples from Toni Morrison’s fiction.Next, I describe the magical elements in Song of Solomon. In this novel the supernatural is connected to the ancestral past and the African American identity. The myth of the flying Africans is a framework for this story.Finally, I provide various existing interpretations of Beloved, as a historical novel and a Gothic ghost story, proving that the real and the supernatural layers are of equal importance.
