Constructing cultural memory. Katyń massacre in polish culture after 1989

Temat niniejszej pracy stanowi funkcjonowanie motywu zbrodni katyńskiej w polskiej kulturze po 1989 roku, widziane w perspektywie memory studies. Przedmiot badań jest więc zdefiniowany jako szczególny kształt pamięci kulturowej – splot procesualnych i dynamicznych praktyk pamiętania, znajdujących swój wyraz i narzędzie w bardzo różnych tekstach i działaniach w ramach kultury. Na ich postać mają wpływ nie tylko uwarunkowania wypływające z samej pamiętanej przeszłości, ale także z ogólnego kształtu dyskursu publicznego w danym czasie i miejscu oraz, szczególnie, z istniejących wcześniej form i sposobów upamiętniania. W proponowanym ujęciu pamięć kulturowa ma charakter konstrukcji, a działania, których strategicznym celem jest wpływanie na jej kształt, opisywane są jako polityki pamięci. W pracy analizie zostają poddane teksty należące do obszaru filmu (dokumentalnego i fabularnego), literatury (profesjonalnej i amatorskiej), a także praktyk upamiętniania funkcjonujących w dyskursie publicznym (jak na przykład obchody rocznicowe) – oraz ich kontekst tworzony przez dyskurs polityczny. Celem pracy jest pokazanie – na przykładzie tekstów kultury odnoszących się do zbrodni katyńskiej – mechanizmów działania pamięci kulturowej oraz współtworzonych przez nią wzorów polskiej tożsamości.

The topic of the hereby thesis is the Katyń massacre theme in polish culture after 1989, analyzed above all in the methodological perspective of memory studies. The aim of the project is to observe a specific form of cultural memory – an entanglement of dynamic and processual memory practices, which organize and are expressed in many different cultural texts and activities in the field of culture. These practices are influenced not only by a shape of a remembered past, but albo by the form of contemporary public discourse and by earlier ways of recollection. In this perspective cultural memory is a construct, and activities which are invented to influence it are called politics of memory. In this thesis texts from the field of cinema (documentary and feature films), literature (professional and amateur texts) and commemoration practices are analyzed, together with their context created by the political discourse. The goal of the thesis is to show – using cultural texts concentrating on the Katyń massacre theme – the mechanisms of cultural memory and the patterns of polish identity in which it is involved.
