The subject of the present thesis is the analysis of coexistence and supposed contacts between Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens. In the introduction part of the study, the outline of human evolution and similarities and differences between the two species have been presented. Then, the period of Middle Paleolithic has been researched, that is to say, the time before the appearance of Homo sapiens in Europe. Special attention has been paid to the technics of stone tools preparing used by Neanderthals in this time, as well as to the possible manifestations of abstract thinking ability. The research of the coexistence between Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens started from the outline of cultural situation in the Lewant area, and in further part of the work the author has focused on the coexistence and contacts between the two species in Europe. In the final part of the thesis different observations, hypothesis and conclusions concerning the character of the contacts between Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens have been offered, as well as the possible reasons of the Neanderthals’ disappearance.

Przedmiotem niniejszej pracy jest analiza koegzystencji oraz potencjalnych kontaktów między gatunkami Homo neanderthalensis i Homo sapiens. W części wstępnej zaprezentowano zarysu ewolucji człowieka oraz przedstawiono podobieństwa i różnice pomiędzy oboma gatunkami. Następnie przebadano okres środkowego paleolitu, czyli czasy przed pojawieniem się formy Homo sapiens na terenie Europy, analizując zarówno techniki obróbki narzędzi kamiennych stosowane przez neandertalczyków w tym okresie, jak i przejawy zdolności abstrakcyjnego myślenia. Badanie współwystępowania Homo neanderthalensis i Homo sapiens rozpoczęto od zarysowania sytuacji kulturowej na terenie Lewantu, a w dalszej części pracy skupiono się na koegzystencji neandertalczyków i Homo sapiens w Europie. W końcowej części pracy przedstawiono hipotezy, obserwacje i wnioski dotyczące charakteru kontaktów między Homo neanderthalensis i Homo sapiens, oraz podano możliwe przyczyny zaniku neandertalczyków.
