The aim of this study was to describe the functioning of Lives of Saints by Peter Skarga in the traditional old Polish culture. The area of interest was whether the circumstances affecting the creation of works his editions, their social purpose, reception by readers together witch author’s own writing technique.The first chapter is devoted to explaining the concept of hagiography and the indication of the best-known works from their litearatury genre. The origins and the development of hagiography in Poland were traced. Lists the most respected native hagiographers and their works. The attention was also drawn to their content, structure, and reception by the readers. The work also discussed patterns of human behavior (the ideal saint promoted in the literature), with particular emphasis on the ideal of a pious princess, bishop-martyr.The next chapter outlines the historical and bibliographical Lives of the Saints. It mentions of the circumstances of their origin, number and years of release, author’s dedications and readership. Later in the dissertation building blocks used in hagiographic literature were enumerated together with specific examples, of their construction and function which they pleyed in hagioraphicac masterpieces.The final chapter was devoted to the reception work of the Lives of the saints among the readers and factors influencing it’s great popularity. It also identifies a potential group of readers and the elements of the work, affecting the growth of interest in the recipient. A supplement to the work constitutes a description of the functioning of the Lives of the saints in the polish highland culture.

Celem pracy był opis funkcjonowania Żywotów świętych Piotra Skargi w kulturze staropolskiej. Obszarem zainteresowań były zarówno okoliczności wpływające na powstanie dzieła, jego edycje, ich przeznaczenie społeczne, odbiór przez czytelników, jak i warsztat pisarski samego autora.Pierwszy rozdział poświęcono wyjaśnieniu pojęcia hagiografii oraz wskazaniu najbardziej znanych dzieł z zakresu żywotopisarstwa. Prześledzono również początki i rozwój hagiografii na ziemiach polskich. Wymieniono najbardziej cenionych rodzimych hagiografów oraz ich dzieła. Zwrócono uwagę na ich treść, budowę oraz odbiór przez czytelników. Omówiono również propagowane w literaturze wzorce zachowań ludzkich (ideał świętego), ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ideału pobożnej księżnej, biskupa- męczennika.W kolejnym rozdziale przedstawiono zarys historyczno- bibliograficzny Żywotów świętych. Wspomniano o okolicznościach ich powstania, liczbie i latach wydań, dedykacjach autorskich, poczytności.W dalszej części wyróżniono elementy topiki hagiograficznej stosowane w dziele polskiego hagiografa. Omówiono na konkretnych przykładach ich budowę oraz rolę, jaką pełniły w dziele hagiograficznym.Ostatni rozdział pracy poświęcono recepcji Żywotów świętych. Określono czynniki mające wpływ na ich wielką popularność. Wskazano również potencjalne grona czytelników oraz elementy dzieła, wpływające na wzrost zainteresowania odbiorcy. Dodatek do pracy stanowi opis funkcjonowania Żywotów świętych w kulturze góralskiej.
